Pre-Season Power Rankings: Mild Conjecture Edition

The Front Runners: These teams should hit the ground running.

1. Prater…Later Caitlin (+1) surprised no one with her choice of Jamaal Charles for her keeper. She added some serious talent with Julius Thomas (aka the Tank Engine) and Julio Jones. Sammy Watkins and T.Y. Hilton round out a strong receiving corps. At QB she has Nick Foles and Ben Roethlisberger with Alex Smith riding the pine. These are a major improvement over last year. She is solid at defense with the Niners to start and the Texans backing them up. Her only downside is the suspension of Matt Prater for four games but that is easily remedied. Look for Caitlin to come out on top and stay there.
2. Who do you want for Kaepernick? Greg B (-2) A major gaff during the draft prompted a flurry of trade proposals form our reigning champion and caused him to drop a spot in the power rankings. Adding Richardson and Gerhart back to back gives Greg some depth at running back but could leave him short in other areas. Strong running backs and good receivers give Greg a big upside however Eli Manning and Tony Romo are not the most reliable quarterbacks to have on your fantasy team. Overall Greg’s team looks good and he should remain one of the top contenders in the league.
3. Battle in Seattle Mr. Joyce (+5) has jumped several spots in these rankings due to a superlative draft. Drew Brees and Andy Dalton should make for fantastic QB pairing and Lynch and Morris should make for a solid running back tandem as well. Jimmy has some incredible talent at WR. While there are doubts about DeSean Jackson in Washington he is an undeniably talented receiver and Larry Fitzgerald will be targeted heavily in the Arizona offense. He also picked up the number one defense in the league: Seattle. This should give Jimmy a leg up on most of his competitors. Jimmy is a major threat for this year’s championship.

The Scrum: The battle for the playoffs will be hard fought by the teams below.

4. Strange Bedfellows Mikey (-1) has the pleasure of having the two best quarterbacks of our era on his team: Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. These two could carry Mikey to the playoffs despite a weaker run game. Mikey does have decent wide receivers and a great defense in the Bengals. Mikey should be a contender for the playoffs but will face some serious competition from the ranks below.
5. The Real McCoy Andrew (-1) has a very well rounded team. He has a great quarterback in Cam Newton and a phenomenal running back in LeSean McCoy. Doug Martin and Roddy White have plenty of talent but are coming off some fairly abysmal seasons. Andrew’s other players are solid fantasy picks and the Chiefs defense should lend a big hand. Overall a middle of the pack team but bounce back performances from Martin and White will put Andrew in the playoffs.
6. Questions Abound Brian (+1) took a gamble and kept Eddie Lacy. The sophomore running back put together an impressive rookie season but the Packers tend to have a pass heavy offense with Rodgers at the helm. Brian did manage to draft Jimmy Graham, Antonio Brown and Reggie Bush; three very talented players who should counteract any slump from Lacy. Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, and Anquan Boldin round out a deep receiving corps. A few of Brian’s later picks add some doubt to his long term performance. Will Bishop Shaquille “Hanky-Panky” Sankey add any value to the team? Will Johnny Manziel end up starting? Is Austin Seferian-Jenkins NOT the greatest tight end to ever play the game? The answers to these questions will determine if Brian is able to maintain his lofty rank of Fourth forever or perhaps even attain heights greater than that.
7. Nine Bye Nine Steve (+2) took Megatron in the first round of the draft. Johnson, along with Steve’s QBs, Stafford and Cutler, will be a big part of Steve’s drive for the championship. Steve’s downside is running backs. Zac Stacy and Fred Jackson both put up very sporadic performances last year. CJ Spiller looks to take a lot of carries away from Jackson and the loss of Sam Bradford will mean defenses will focus much more on shutting down Stacy. Steve will have to rely on his receivers in order to make it to the playoffs
8. Luck Be a Lady Alison (-2) put together a very nice draft. Two solid QBs in Andrew Luck and Matt Ryan, a great RB tandem of DeMarco Murray and Andre Ellington along with a spectacular receiver in Demaryius Thomas. A lack of depth could give Alison trouble as the season goes on. She will need to add some pieces if she wants to make a push for the Prince of Wales.

The Pit:These teams will need some serious work to make it to the playoffs.

9. RG Three-peat Tim (+1) was blessed by the gods of autodraft. Aaron Rodgers is a major improvement on Tim’s QBs from last year and Adrian Peterson should be a constant source of points. RG3 makes a return appearance on Tim’s team for the third year running. After a down season last year, Griffin could continue to give Tim trouble. Ben Tate as his second RB could harm Tim’s chances of making the playoffs but he has some very good receivers to make up for it. Tim has a lot to prove after earning the Birdo last year. Let’s see if he can dig himself out of the basement.
10. Autodraft Apocalypse unlike Tim, Greg K (-5) must have offended the gods of autodraft for they did not treat him kindly. Greg didn’t get a quarterback until the 16th round and that quarterback is now out for the season. Two of his players are currently suspended and Greg’s second quarterback is Geno Smith. Greg, however, is picking up the pieces after his dismal draft, he has already acquired a new QB, Ryan Fitzpatrick, who should have a decent year with the Texans. Greg needs to do a lot of work if he hopes to make the playoffs but it’s a long season and anything can happen.
